Ring size is not a measurement of your finger. It's a measurement of the ring. ISO 8653, the international standard for jewelry ring sizes, defines the size as the inner circumference of the band in millimeters — a size 10 in the US system has an inner circumference of about 62.2mm regardless of how wide the band is.
Which is exactly why two rings that are both "size 10" don't feel the same. The 8mm band is a longer tunnel. It has to clear your knuckle over a greater distance, and it sits against more of your finger at the base once it's on. Nothing about the size changed. The geometry did.
The practical rule most jewelers use is to add a quarter to a half size once a band goes past about 6mm. That is a starting point, not a law, and it varies with how pronounced your knuckle is. Someone with a knuckle much larger than the base of their finger has to clear a bigger obstacle, and a wide band makes that harder in both directions: harder to get on, and looser once it's past.

Five grams sounds trivial. On your hand it isn't nothing, because you feel weight as pressure over a small area and you feel it continuously for the rest of your life. Does hand size decide the width?
Sort of, and the rule as it's usually stated is too simple. "Big hands wear 8mm, small hands wear 6mm" is repeated everywhere and it misses what actually governs how a width reads on a hand, which is finger length relative to width, not overall hand size.
A short, broad finger under an 8mm band ends up with very little skin showing between the ring and the knuckle, and the band reads as a cuff rather than a ring. A long finger carries 8mm easily even on a hand that isn't especially large. What your eye is actually judging is the ratio of band width to the length of skin showing between your knuckle and the base of your finger, which is why the same 8mm ring looks proportionate on one person and looks like too much on another with the same hand size.
There's also a comfort effect running in the opposite direction from the usual advice. A wider band spreads its weight over more area, so an 8mm ring can press less at any given point than a narrower, heavier ring. Plenty of people who assume they want 6mm because it sounds more comfortable try both and pick 8mm.
Try both if you possibly can. Failing that, wrap a strip of paper 8mm wide around your finger and look at it in a mirror. It's cruder than it sounds and it works.
Comfort fit matters more at 8mm than at 6mm
A comfort fit ring has a domed, slightly convex interior instead of a flat one, so the inner edges curve away from your skin. Less metal touches you, the band clears the knuckle more easily, and the edges don't dig in.
At 6mm the difference between comfort fit and a flat interior is noticeable. At 8mm it's the difference between a ring you wear and a ring you take off. A flat-interior 8mm band presents two hard edges 8mm apart, both pressing into your finger, and it traps everything between them.
This is also why "comfort fit rings run about half a size small" is unreliable advice at wider widths. The domed interior makes the ring easier to slide on, which pushes you toward sizing down, while the extra width makes it grip harder once it's on, which pushes you back up. At 8mm those two effects roughly cancel. Don't automatically size down for comfort fit on a wide band.
The tungsten catch: you only get one shot
Everything above is true for any metal. Here's what makes it sharper for tungsten specifically.
Tungsten carbide is sintered, not cast, and it's hard enough (around 8.5 to 9 on the Mohs scale) that it can't be stretched, cut and rejoined, or reshaped by any bench technique a jeweler has. Tungsten rings can't be resized. Not "it's expensive," not "most jewelers won't." It isn't physically possible.

If you work with your hands
Two things change the calculation, and they point in opposite directions.
Gloves. A wider band is harder to get in and out of a fitted glove and more likely to bunch the material. If you're in and out of nitrile gloves all day, 6mm is the easier life. Thin men's wedding bands at 4mm are worth a look if even 6mm feels like too much.
Snag risk. Anyone working around machinery, ladders, or livestock should know about ring avulsion, an injury where a ring catches on something as the hand falls away and strips the soft tissue from the finger. It's uncommon but severe, and finger avulsion and amputation injuries account for around 5% of upper-extremity injuries seen in US emergency departments. Width doesn't change the risk much on its own, but a snug wide band is harder to remove in a hurry than a snug narrow one. The real mitigation is a silicone band for work and your good ring the rest of the time, not choosing 6mm over 8mm.
Worth being straight about the tungsten angle here too, since it gets marketed badly in both directions: a tungsten ring can be cracked off in an emergency room with a standard vise grip because tungsten carbide is brittle. That's genuinely a safety advantage over gold, which has to be cut. It is not a reason to ignore snag risk.
What sits under the band
Slightly awkward but useful: an 8mm ring covers about 33% more skin, and that skin doesn't get to dry out.
The Mayo Clinic describes wedding ring rash as irritant contact dermatitis caused by soap, water and sweat trapped under a band rather than by the metal itself. More coverage means more trapped residue, and it's the most common reason someone decides a wide band "doesn't agree with them" when the metal was never the problem.
The fix is boring and it works: slide the ring off when you wash your hands, rinse under it, dry it properly. If you're already prone to skin irritation on your hands, that's a mild argument for 6mm.

Plain finishes work at either. A brushed or hammered band with no inlay doesn't need the space, and at 8mm a plain band can look heavier than intended.

An 8mm ring with a full width inlay will weigh 10 grams and a 6mm closer to 6.
The case against overthinking this
The strongest counter-argument to everything above is that width is genuinely reversible in a way most ring decisions aren't. You wear the wrong metal for forty years. If you pick 8mm and find you'd rather have 6mm, at this price point you buy the 6mm.
And the sizing anxiety can be overdone. The half-size adjustment is a starting point, plenty of people wear their normal size in 8mm without trouble, and a good exchange policy makes the whole thing low-stakes. How to decide in about a minute
- Look at your current watch and any ring you already wear. If you wear chunky, 8mm will feel normal. If you don't wear jewelry at all, start at 6mm.
- Check the finger, not the hand. Long fingers carry 8mm. Short, broad fingers usually look better at 6mm.
- Consider the design. Wood, meteorite and gemstone inlays want 8mm. Plain brushed and hammered finishes are fine at either, and often better at 6mm.
- Think about gloves. In and out of them all day? 6mm.
