IP plating (ion plating) is a type of PVD coating that bonds a thin, very hard layer of colored metal, usually titanium nitride or zirconium nitride, onto a ring inside a vacuum chamber. It's how a tungsten ring gets its black, rose gold, or gold finish. On a quality ring that coating is far tougher than old-school electroplating, roughly 1,500 to 3,000 HV in hardness versus about 100 HV for traditional gold plating, so the color holds up through years of daily wear. It can eventually show some wear at the high-contact edges, but the tungsten underneath stays intact and scratch-resistant the entire time.

What "IP plating" actually means

IP stands for Ion Plating, and it's one method inside a family of coating processes called PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition). In plain English: the ring goes into a sealed vacuum chamber, a source metal is vaporized and electrically charged, and those charged particles get driven onto the ring's surface, where they bond at the atomic level. What you end up with is a dense, even, color-fast layer. Not a paint, not a dip, but a coating essentially fused to the metal.

That distinction is the whole ballgame when you're buying. Cheap colored rings often rely on electroplating, where a softer layer (around 100 HV, about as hard as solid gold) is deposited chemically. IP and PVD coatings come in much harder, in the 1,500 to 3,000 HV range, which is why they survive daily contact that would rub electroplating right through. One accelerated wear test makes the gap obvious: traditional gold plating showed base-metal exposure after about 500 abrasion cycles, while PVD coatings still held their finish past 5,000.

How long does IP plating last on a ring?

This is the real question behind most "what is IP plating" searches, so here's the honest version. With normal wear and reasonable care, a quality IP-coated ring keeps its color for several years, commonly in the three-to-seven-year range, before any wear becomes visible, and often longer.

The flat face wears slowest. The part of the ring most people actually look at, the top face, takes the least abrasion and keeps its color longest. When wear does show, it starts at the edges and high-contact points.

Thickness and quality drive the lifespan. A premium coating, roughly 0.8 to 1.0 microns or thicker, outlasts a thin one by years. And the tungsten itself never degrades: even if the color eventually shows edge wear, the tungsten carbide underneath stays exactly as hard and scratch-resistant as the day you bought it.

Now the honest trade-off: once a plated finish does wear or chip, it generally can't be restored. Re-coating tungsten is technically possible but rarely offered, because the metal's hardness and the vacuum process make it impractical for most jewelers. So think of a plated ring as a finish that ages slowly rather than one you'll ever refresh.

IP plating isn't unique to jewelry, and the company it keeps tells you a lot about how tough it is. The same coating technology protects watch cases, surgical instruments and medical implants, electronic connectors, automotive trim, and aerospace components. A note on skin safety and binders

One thing worth knowing if you have sensitive skin: tungsten carbide is held together by a binder metal, and the quality of that binder matters. Jewelry-grade tungsten uses a skin-safe nickel or chromium binder and is fully hypoallergenic. Cheap industrial-grade tungsten sometimes uses a cobalt binder, which can oxidize and irritate sensitive skin. It's an invisible spec, so it comes down to who you buy from.

How to care for an IP-plated ring

  • Take it off for harsh work. Heavy lifting, tools, and abrasive surfaces are what wear the edges fastest.
  • Rinse after pools and hot tubs. Long chlorine and chemical exposure is hard on any coating.
  • Clean it gently with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. Skip the abrasive cleaners.
  • Store it separately so it isn't knocking against harder objects.

Does IP plating wear off?
