A rare metal with a worn-in surface. This 6mm tantalum band is finished to a distressed matte, so it arrives already looking like it has been somewhere rather than waiting to pick up its first mark.
Tantalum is naturally dark gray - closer to charcoal than to steel - and that color is the metal itself, not a plating or a coating. The surface is worked over in fine scratches running every direction, which catches almost no light and gives the dome a stone-like depth. It is a dense metal, so it sits heavier on the hand than titanium, close to what you would expect from tungsten.
WHY TANTALUM? It is one of the few ring metals that is both rare and wearable: biocompatible and hypoallergenic, highly corrosion-resistant, and unlike the hardest ceramics and carbides it is a true metal that bends rather than shatters under a hard blow.
